Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

As the community engagement specialist for Caddo Public Schools, I work with our neediest schools in the school system called the Transformation Zone.

What often is lacking is quality literature.

Reading is Fundamental has consistently put books in children’s hands year after year.

The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrate reading, writing, and stage presence by having the annual RIF essay contest and spelling bee which impacts over 300 scholars from over 10 elementary schools in Caddo Parish.

The scholars beam with excitement at the event each fall as well at the parents and leaders who come out to support each student. I am thankful that Reading is Fundamental through the Ivy Crown Community Services.

Shreveport is better for making reading first in our community.

"Reading is fundamental has made a positive impact on my students and school! At JSC our students struggle with reading and comprehending. Having the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha come in and read to the students encourages and motivates them to read. Not only do they read, but they also afford the students an opportunity to choose their own book so that they may read on their own. Because the students are allowed to choose a book of their interest, they are motivated to read outside of school.

This program is by far an asset to J.S. Clark Elementary School."
